San Francisco community commemorates World AIDS Day – NBC Bay Area
In San Francisco, people gathered near the National AIDS Memorial Grove on Sunday for World AIDS Day observances.
They commemorated the lives lost to AIDS-related illnesses and highlighted those who are helping prevent the virus and end the HIV epidemic.
John Cunningham, CEO of the National AIDS Memorial, addressed the crowd in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.
“Today, we commemorate World AIDS Day as a national day of remembrance against HIV and AIDS,” he said. “While it is a solemn responsibility for us to honor and remember the lives cut short, we must also redouble our efforts so that we can continue to fight for health equity and social justice. is also important.
San Francisco resident Robert Mansfield attended the event and told NBC Bay Area it's important to keep sharing stories.
“I came to San Francisco in the 1970s,” he said. “I was here in the '80s and '90s. When it first hit, I joined. I lost a lot of friends.”

State Sen. Scott Wiener also spoke and addressed potential concerns for the incoming federal administration.
“We are going to do everything in Sacramento to support this community, support access to health care, and support people living with HIV and those at risk for HIV,” he said.
