Influenza cases surge to 'high level' across Georgia
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Flu cases in Georgia are surging to “high levels,” according to the latest data from the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In the latest data for the 50th week ending Dec. 14, Georgia 1 of 15 states Reporting “high” or “very high” levels of influenza.
“Everyone's sick. Everyone's walking around coughing. Hacking. It's just spreading,” said Shanae Smith, a nurse at VitalCare Express, an emergency clinic in Roswell.
Smith said confirmed cases of influenza A and influenza B are increasing.
“A lot of people come in and they think they have coronavirus, and when we swab them and test them, they end up with influenza A or influenza B. It turns out that they are infected,” Smith said.
The CDC reports that the number of new coronavirus infections nationwide is at a low level, down from a summer surge.
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is also reporting an increase in flu cases.
“At Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, we are seeing an increase in the number of emergency department and urgent care center visits due to respiratory illnesses,” a hospital spokesperson said.
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta said the best way to reduce the spread of the flu is to get vaccinated, stay home if you're sick and wash your hands.
“As we approach the holidays, we expect volumes to increase as families and friends gather in large groups. Communities are doing their part to stop the spread of the virus and keep the health care system accessible to those in need. “We can fulfill our mission,” a hospital spokesperson said.
