Should South Georgia be concerned about the potential impact of bird flu?
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – H5N1, or avian influenza, is a virus that originates from wild birds, according to the CDC. Both poultry and cattle can be infected with this virus.
Humans are also at risk of exposure through consumption of dairy products and contact with infected animals.
“I think people need to be properly concerned. And for most people, that means taking precautions if they're engaging in any type of high-risk exposure. So dairy If you're a farm or poultry farm worker, you absolutely need to take precautions,” said Dr. Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the University of Saskatchewan.
According to the CDC, there have been 65 confirmed cases of bird flu in the United States, but so far there have been no cases in Georgia. However, many people are at risk of exposure. Experts say people who keep backyard chickens should wear appropriate personal protective equipment when around the birds.
“Given the different ways that avian influenza spreads, the biggest vector is usually the migration of wild birds, which introduces avian influenza into areas where it hasn’t existed before, especially when it comes to food such as free-range eggs. “It's very difficult to control interactions between domestic and wild birds when you need something,” said Chad Hart, an agricultural economist at Iowa State University.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced in November that more than 6 million infected chickens had been slaughtered to stop the virus from spreading to humans, but recent trends in raw milk consumption favor unpasteurized dairy products. Experts are concerned about people.
“I strongly advise people not to drink raw milk. This is not a good way to develop immunity to H5N1, but it is important to avoid exposure to large amounts of H5N1, which can cause severe or fatal disease, especially in children. “It could be a very good way to do that,” Rasmussen continued.
Experts say bird flu is rarely transmitted from person to person. Individuals are more likely to contract the virus through exposure to or ingestion of infected animals or their byproducts. The University of Georgia is currently one of five institutions working with the Food and Drug Administration to test the nation's dairy supply for signs of H5N1.
