Dairy farmers across Arizona are on high alert for bird flu
TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Bird flu continues to be a concern nationwide, especially in dairy cattle.
The virus has been detected on more than 800 dairy farms in 16 states.
As of now, Arizona has none of those.

Parsons said Arizona veterinarians have been on high alert and have implemented various requirements and regulations since avian influenza was first detected in dairy cows in other states.
“All cows that leave the dairy farm at this point are going directly to the packing plant,” Parsons said. “But they are being tracked by federal authorities and state veterinarians.”
Parsons said raw milk is quite popular here in Arizona, but to ensure public health, individuals can no longer purchase dairy cows for raw milk.
This is primarily how the virus is impacting Parsons' business.
“Nursing cows or cows that are giving milk cannot be sold for human consumption,” Parsons said.
Although Parsons is the only one actually affected, he said dairy farmers across the state are testing the cows themselves for bird flu, not just the milk coming out of the cows.
“Arizona dairy farmers are also very vigilant, testing all cows that go out of state for breeding purposes, and testing all calves,” Parsons said.
Mr Parsons said further spread of the virus could lead to a dairy cow shortage, explaining that bird flu does not kill dairy cows, but rather causes them to stop lactating.
But Arizona has had bird flu outbreaks before, and he said he's not too worried about it having a major impact.
“Like any other flu, it's an illness that will eventually be cured,” Parsons said.
Dr Parsons revealed that avian influenza cannot be detected in pasteurized milk or meat from dairy cows.
