Five more deaths from soil-borne disease melioidosis in northern Queensland

Cairns and Hinterland Health Service confirmed that five more people have died from melioidosis, bringing the area's death toll to nine.

Townsville ranks third in soil-borne disease deaths, bringing the total to 12 in northern Queensland.

Jacqueline Murdoch, director of Tropical Public Health Services, said the area has recorded 53 cases since the beginning of the year.

“It's definitely a record year,” she said.

“Certainly we haven't seen anything like this.“

Townsville has recorded 34 cases since January 1st.

“Very severe illness”

Dr. Murdoch said most cases came from the South Corridor of Cairns, but some were also detected in Central Cairns.

“Manura, Manunda, those areas, but all the way up to Edmonton, we're seeing most of the incidents,” she said.

Dr. Murdoch said the death toll is surprising, but it coincides with the risk of illness.

“It's a very severe illness and has a pretty high mortality rate, so there are now a large number of deaths, which reflects a large number of cases,” she said.

Dr. Murdoch said people with older adults and their immune systems are at higher risk, including cancer patients, heavy drinkers and diabetics.

She said that while most of the patients are older, there have also been cases among younger people.

Dr. Murdoch and Queensland Health refused to provide further details of the patient's age, gender, or nature of exposure due to privacy concerns.

Bacteria in the air

Dr. Murdoch said the reasons for the surge in cases are being investigated.

“The climate has something to do with that,” she said.

“Last year we had such a big rainy season. It probably contributes to a high number.“

Dr. Murdoch said the majority of patients suffered from the illness in a similar way.

“When that heavy rain comes, the bacteria go into the air and people suck it in,” she said.

Skin scuffs in contact with water, moist soil and water can also lead to infection.

Dr. Murdoch urged people to do their best to stay safe.

“These people really need to be aware that they are outside in heavy rain and are in contact with the soil. Certainly, anyone using high pressure hoses should wear a mask. There is,” she said.

Dr. Murdoch said anyone with cough or difficulty breathing should go to the GP or emergency department.

“It's a very serious illness and can progress very quickly,” she said.
