WA Health Department reviews three new cases of measles as outbreaks grow

The outbreak of measles in Western Australia has grown into eight confirmed cases, with authorities warning that the number is likely to continue to increase.

Three more cases were confirmed on Sunday by Paul Effler, representative director of infectious diseases at the Ministry of Health.

Two of these cases were from the Banbury Regional Hospital exposure site and participated in healthcare workers in two previously confirmed cases.

Other new cases have been confirmed in one of the state's prisons.

Hakea prison at Perth and Bunbury Regional Prison were both on the list of exposure sites.

“There were a few more confirmed incidents over the weekend, and that's not entirely surprising,” Dr. Effler said.

Dr. Effler said the number of cases is expected to grow in the coming days.

“The bad news is that measles are really infectious. In fact, it may be the most infectious disease known to humans,” he said.

“But the good news is that it is completely preventable.

“The vaccination rate is very high at around 90%, but measles is so infected that around 95% of people need to be fully vaccinated.”

He said people ages 30 to 60 should check their vaccination history to make sure they have two rounds of measles vaccines.

The source of the origin of the occurrence has not been identified yet,

Dr. Effler said the timeline when symptoms appear means it can be a challenge.

“People have infected other people the day before they realised they were sick and then they've been infected all the time before they developed the rash,” Dr. Effler said.

He said most infected people do not need medical assistance due to high vaccination rates in the community.

“But for some people, lung infections can be very serious, which can make breathing difficult,” he said.

The Ministry of Health has listed more than 40 exposure sites in Perth and the Southwest over the past three weeks.

Dr. Effler said people don't need to be afraid of the place.

“When listing exposure suites, it's not a contaminated place,” he said.

“People don't have to be afraid to go to these grocery stores, GP clinics or hospitals based on these prior exposures.

“If the infection leaves the area within 30 minutes, it's no longer a risk.”
