The discovery of stem cells in the human retina may lead to retinal degeneration treatment

Using human retinal organoids derived from human embryonic stem cell lines, the team identified a population of cells with transcriptional profiles similar to HNRSCs in the fetal retina. The researchers implanted these cells into a mouse model of retinal pigmentitis at 2-3 weeks of age at 2-3 weeks of age, where retinal cell degeneration is already underway, and monitored them for four months. New cells differentiated, integrated into the host animal's retina, and even formed functional synapses. Using an optometric response assay, the investigators found a partial improvement in visual function in HNRSC-treated mice.
Although promising, further studies are needed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of HNRSC-mediated retinal repair and test cells in animal models of late retinal degeneration. However, the authors hope that their findings will enhance the field's understanding of retinal biology and highlight the potential for regeneration of HNRSCs.
