“We don't recommend using cough or cold medication to treat allergies because they don't reach the root of the allergy symptoms,” says Yanny. “If over-the-counter medication doesn't seem to help or something appears to be off, call your child's pediatrician.”

In some cases, allergy tests may be required to determine the exact allergen and develop a specific treatment plan. This includes testing skin stings where results are interpreted by allergies, according to Yanny.

Other useful tips for parents to reduce the overall impact of seasonal allergies include changing bedding, showering and bathing at night, maintaining windows closed, checking the number of pollen when there are high numbers of pollen and leaving the windows closed so that they can stay inside.
