Plymouth University Examination Treats Long Covid Symptoms
Plymouth researchers are working on a project to search for effective treatments for long-term Covid symptoms.
The University of Plymouth (UOP) said it was part of the Erase Long Covid project led by Derby University, which was launched in September 2024.
Over 144 million people around the world said they lived with a long-term community with people experiencing fatigue, shortness of breath, motion pit and brain fog.
The university said it is testing antiviral drugs already in use to treat Covid-19 patients in hospitals.
Researchers said that most people infected with Covid-19 were not hospitalized in this condition, and therefore had no way of accessing antiviral drugs.
However, this study, managed by the university's Peninsula Clinical Trial Unit (PENCTU), will examine whether the drug can alleviate symptoms of long-term covid.
Project lead Mark Faggie said: “The impact of long covid on patients' lives is enormous.
“For many, it can debilitate and interfere with work, home life and socialization, and millions of people suffer worldwide. But there is no confirmed treatment for this condition at present.
“Five years after the start of the pandemic, the long-term Covid remains a critical health and social challenge and this project is extremely important.”
