530 new cases of coronavirus in Sedgwick County, mostly due to prison testing

Wichita, Kansas (KSNW)—The Sedgwick County Department of Health has added 530 new cases of coronavirus to its COVID-19 dashboard. It brings the total number of cases in the county to 6,121. This is a 9.5% increase in one day. There is also one new death.

Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office says most of the new cases are due to inspections conducted in prison.

The sheriff’s office began mass inspection of prisoners on August 10. The prison population is more than 1500 inmates.

It took us 5 days to test everyone. During that time, about 60 prisoners per day were either held in prison or released from prison.

Some prisoners were released before the results returned.

As of Thursday, 523 inmates were positive for COVID-19 and 747 inmates were negative.

Some of the jail positive cases were already added to the Department of Health website, so the latest county website update included only 469 positive cases from prisons.

According to the sheriff’s office, prisoners who test positive are separated from those who test negative. A contracted medical institution treats a symptomatic inmate.

The county says inmates do not require hospitalization.

Based on the CDC recommendations, asymptomatic positive cases are considered to have recovered within 10 days of testing, according to a news release. It is estimated that by the end of the weekend, approximately 400 detainees will be considered recovered.
