Two new drugs to treat advanced prostate cancer in men have been recognized by Prostate Cancer UK as “true breakthroughs.”
The olaparib and ipatasertib drugs may be the first precision drugs for prostate cancer.
Treatment can be targeted to individuals because such drugs take into account the genetics of human cancer, including genetic, environmental, and lifestyle diversity.

A new study presented at the European Medical Association’s Virtua Congress 2020 argues that the two drugs may represent a “new era in the treatment of prostate cancer.”
Dr. Matthew Hobbes, Research Director at Prostate Cancer UK, said the results are truly groundbreaking and could benefit thousands of men in the advanced stages of the disease.
Olaparib is currently approved for breast cancer patients and has been shown to slow the progression of prostate cancer in men whose tumors contain specific genetic defects.
The second drug, ipatasertib, is designed to treat men who lack a specific gene called PTEN in their cancer and has shown early positive results in the test.
