Changes in a single gene appear to be related to both the size of the gray matter in the part of the brain that processes the expression of quantity and the ability of mathematics.

The team found that ROBO1 variability was significantly associated with increased right parietal lobe size.
In addition, children aged 3 to 6 years with a large amount of gray matter in the right parietal cortex were found to perform better on math tests at the age of 7 to 9.
This suggests that “individual differences in right parietal lobe growth” may represent a missing link in the understanding of “reported associations between DNA mutations and mathematical performance of behavior.” The team wrote.
