Twenty-five elderly people “died in a district care facility”
New figures show that the coronavirus has been associated with the deaths of at least 25 people in long-term care facilities in the district since the crisis began.
The Independent Care Group called for a “short, sharp blockade” to curb the spread of infection in care homes across the country as the number of deaths in care homes in England and Wales increased for the fifth straight week.
According to National Bureau of Statistics figures, 122 Covid-19-related deaths were tentatively registered with Braintree by October 17.
Of these, 32 occurred outside the hospital, 25 occurred in long-term care facilities, and 5 occurred in private homes.
Two more people died in hospice, other community facilities, or elsewhere.
This means that two deaths in nursing homes have been recorded since July 18.
Around England and Wales, 53,789 deaths related to Covid-19 were tentatively registered until 17 October. Of these, 29% – 15,747 – were long-term care facilities, and just under two-thirds were hospitals.
With the increasing number of cases of this disease in some hospitals, it is already necessary to reduce the number of non-urgent procedures that can be performed and planned.
In the week leading up to October 9, there were 63 deaths in long-term care facilities in both countries, which were listed on the death certificate as “new coronavirus.” According to ONS, this is still below pre-pandemic levels, but this is the fifth straight week of increase, the highest number since July.
Mike Padgum, Chairman of the Independent Care Group, said: “The number of Covid-19 deaths in care and nursing homes has begun to increase significantly, and we need to act quickly.
“Currently, some people are traveling from high to low infection rates, so the virus is sure to spread.
“Unfortunately, I think the only way is to lock down again and protect the oldest and most vulnerable ones until we can regain control.”
With the surge in positive cases, the number of deaths in all situations has steadily increased, with 438 Covid-related deaths registered in the seven days to October 9 since early July. This is the largest increase in a week.
Sarah Scoby, Deputy Director of Health Think Tank Research at Nafield Trust, said the number of deaths from Covid-19 increased as more parts of the country faced more stringent restrictions on socialization. He said it was not surprising to see him.
Meanwhile, the NHS coalition said it was too early to determine if government intervention was affecting it.
“In some hospitals, the number of cases of this disease is increasing, and we need to reduce the number of non-urgent procedures that can be performed and planned,” said policy director Nick Bill.
