Outbreaks of COVID in Calgary prison continue to spread as 70 prisoners are currently infected
According to a new number provided by Alberta Health Services, 70 prisoners at the Calgary Orthodontic Center tested positive for COVID-19.
As of Wednesday, 70 prisoners and 17 staff were positive on the test. Five previously positive prisoners have been released from the facility and quarantined at home after completing a court-required judgment.
Earlier this week, multiple infected prisoners said they had been transferred to a “hole” — also known as cell confinement or administrative quarantine — and lived in an inhumane state.
“It worries me, loses hope, and worries about my family,” said one prisoner earlier this week. “I feel like I’m stuck here to die.”
Linda, who agreed to use the pseudonym because CBC News fears affecting her loved ones in prison, said the new numbers reported Wednesday were horrifying.
“I have a stomachache,” she said.
Linda’s loved one is in a facility for nonviolent crime. She said he couldn’t wash his hands yet, and two weeks have passed since the prisoners finished their laundry.
“I’m not saying that these people are never innocent or that they should have some glorious places to live in,” she said. “But I need a flush toilet. I need food. I need clean laundry, a hot shower, and fresh air.”
According to the AHS, the increase in the number of inmates was mainly seen on Tuesday after the previously negative inmates were swabbed again.
