New UW Survey Tracks COVID-19’s Mental Impact on Hundreds of King County Residents

Seattle, Washington-The University of Washington is working on the next few months to see how coronaviruses affect our mental health.

About 500 residents of King County are participating in the survey. Participants answer questions focused on mental health each night. Specifically, the questions are centered on anxiety, depression, and social factors.

“If people are suffering now, we want to know about it,” said Lily Slater.

Slater is one of the research assistants in research.

She says that early results showed spikes in mental stressor at various points in the viral pandemic, but it was too early to show what the exact cause was.

“Our hope is that it will increase somewhat in the coming weeks,” Slater said.

The goal is to start posting data findings while the study is still in progress, so that policy makers, health authorities, and the public can see the results.

“We want to make the data available as soon as possible so we can prevent anyone from suffering in the coming months,” Slater said.

Slater says regular exercise, sleep, maintaining a regular schedule, and checking in with family and friends are all ways to help deal with mental stressors arising from the coronavirus.

The study is not funded, but as funding becomes available, it is expected that the sample size will increase and the time the study will take place will be extended.
