The COVID-19 vaccine trial calls for 1,000 NY volunteers and 250 Long Island-NBC New York
The COVID-19 vaccine competition is taking place on Long Island, but residents are uncertain whether to volunteer.
NYU Langone is conducting a vaccine trial for pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. The vaccine has already been tested on 20,000 people worldwide, but is in Phase 3 trials, with NYU Langone recruiting 1,000 volunteers in New York, 250 of whom are from Long Island.
“The virus has been modified and cannot be replicated in the body,” said Dr. Martin Backer, associate director of the NYU Langone Vaccine Center. “It tells our immune system how to react to it.”
Dr. Backer says he is looking for certain types of volunteers, including volunteers over the age of 65, people with medical conditions, ethnic minorities, first-time responders, and essential workers. He also said that the incidence of the virus has increased so recently that it shouldn’t take long for researchers to find out how effective the vaccine is.
“That’s why we’re trying to register people who are at risk of getting sick because of the nature of what they’re doing,” Dr. Backer added. He said the side effects have been mild so far, but not everyone is convinced.
“Yes, it comes with things. Everything comes with side effects and consequences. I don’t want to try it at all,” said Elmont’s Nimes Ward.
“I think it’s too new and I don’t know the risks yet,” said Vicky Divera, who lives in Mineola.
Others appreciated the need for trials to speed up vaccine production, which could mean reviving as we knew.
Greg Vogel said he believes that “the only way to move this forward is to get a vaccine and people need to try it.”
Sae Yamamoto Sunday was one of the first people to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as part of a clinical trial. “Science is the only way we can get out of this turmoil, and I think it’s important if I can help,” said a 69-year-old researcher and scientist.
Two out of three participants will be vaccinated and the third will be given a placebo.
