KPRC 2 aims to participate in the fight against diabetes, stimulate conversation, raise awareness and emphasize the importance of being checked.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is an abbreviation for its full name, diabetes mellitus.by CDC, It is a chronic (long-lasting) health condition that affects how your body converts food into energy. If you have diabetes, your body does not produce enough insulin or cannot use the insulin it produces properly.

There are three main types of diabetes

Type 1 diabetes

About 5-10% of diabetics have type 1 diabetes. It is usually diagnosed in children, teens, and young adults.

Type 2 diabetes

About 90-95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. It develops over many years and is usually diagnosed in adults (although more often in children, teens, and young adults).

Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes affects pregnant women who have never had diabetes. With gestational diabetes, babies may be at increased risk of health problems.

What are the risk factors?

Type 1 diabetes

The known risk factors are:

• Family history: Have a parent, sibling, or sister with type 1 diabetes.
• age: Type 1 diabetes can develop at any age, but it is more likely to occur in children, teens, or young adults.

In the United States, Caucasians are more likely to develop type 1 diabetes than African Americans and Hispanic / Latin Americans.

Currently, no one knows how to prevent type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes

You are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes If you:

• Have prediabetes
• Are you overweight
• 45 years and over
• Have a parent, sibling, or sister with type 2 diabetes
• Physical activity less than 3 times a week
• You have had gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or have given birth to a baby that weighs more than 9 pounds.
• African Americans, Hispanics / Latin Americans, American Indians, or Alaskan Natives (some Pacific Islands and Asian Americans are also at high risk)

Gestational diabetes

You are at risk of developing Gestational diabetes (Diabetes during pregnancy) You:

• Had gestational diabetes during a previous pregnancy
• I gave birth to a baby weighing over 9 pounds
• Are you overweight
• 25 years old and over
• Have a family history of type 2 diabetes
• Have a hormonal disorder called Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
• African Americans, Hispanic / Latin Americans, American Indians, Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians, or Pacific Islands

What are the symptoms?

Talk to your doctor about testing your blood sugar if you have any of the following diabetic symptoms:

• Piss a lot, often at night
• Very thirsty
• Lose weight without trying
• I’m very hungry
• Blurred vision
• Numbness or aching in the hands and feet
• very tired
• The skin is very dry
• I have pain that heals slowly
• There are more infections than usual
