Sheriffs in Wayne and Macomb counties are both infected with COVID-19 due to a surge in cases throughout the state.
Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon announced on Thursday two days after Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said he was infected with the coronavirus, saying he tested positive for COVID-19.
Napoleon said he was negative on the test last Friday, but returned positive after taking another test on Wednesday after his temperature rose. He said he was experiencing “slight headaches” and “mild chills.”
“I’m experiencing very mild symptoms. My spirit is high and my faith is strong,” Napoleon said on Facebook. “As always, I thank you for your prayers and support. May God have glory.”
The coronavirus struck the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office earlier this year, killing Cmdr. Donaphy Collins and two lawmakers.
Napoleon’s brother, Hilton Park Police Chief, Hilton Napoleon, has been hospitalized for more than two months with the coronavirus since March 13. He has recovered.
To date, 96 prisoners have tested positive in departmental prisons.
On Tuesday, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said he tested positive for COVID-19 and was experiencing mild symptoms.
About 20 Macomb County Sheriff employees tested positive for the coronavirus. Macomb County has the highest infection rate in Metro Detroit.
