PEI leaves Atlantic bubbles for at least two weeks

PEI leaves Atlantic bubbles for at least two weeks

Prime Minister Dennis King has announced that PEI has “suspended participation in the Atlantic bubble.” This means that people arriving on the island from other Atlantic states need to be quarantined for 14 days.

The announcement was made during an unscheduled COVID-19 briefing on Monday morning after the weekend incidents in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

From 12:01 am on Tuesday and after midnight on Monday, PEI will suspend all non-essential trips to and from Prince Edward Island for two weeks, according to King.

“This is a layer of special attention,” said King, who spoke with his fellow Atlantic Prime Minister on Sunday. “I hope we can break the transmission chain.”

He said his government would reassess the situation on December 7.

King’s announcement Words from Andrew Furay, Prime Minister of Newfoundland and Labrador He also said, “We have made a tough decision to break the circuit. People arriving from the Atlantic bubbles will have to quarantine themselves for 14 days.”

The new rules will come into effect on Wednesday in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Since July 3, residents of the four Atlantic states have been able to move relatively freely across each other’s borders without quarantine. That freedom ends with two announcements on Monday, at least for now.

King hopes that PEI’s exit from the bubble will be temporary, including people from other parts of Canada where the community is small or nonexistent when announced in June. He added that the goal was to eventually expand.

One new case confirmed

After King talked about PEI’s new rules, Dr. Heather Morrison identified a new case of COVID-19 on an island, a woman in her 40s who traveled from outside the Atlantic foam.

The person is self-isolating and contact tracing is in progress.

In fact, there may be a case in PEI.-Dr. Heather Morrison

“In the last few days, it has become clear that neighbors of Atlantic Canada, especially Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, are experiencing a second wave,” Morrison said. “In reality, there may be a case in PEI.

“I’m worried that I’m already here with some people.”

Return to entry application

According to Morrison, anyone coming to the state from the other three Atlantic states will have to reapply for entry, and students returning to PEI will have to quarantine themselves for two weeks.

Long-term care staff leaving the island are not eligible to work in quarantine upon return. Morrison said further discussions will take place on Monday about possible changes to housing guidelines.

People may continue to travel for medical appointments, and compassionate and custody-related trips can continue. But there are no more interstate sports tournaments.

“I urge all islanders to keep their social circles small,” Morrison said. “We know that COVID-19 moves as it moves.”

Morrison said that people returning from Nova Scotia or New Brunswick last week will have restricted contacts, arranged for examinations if symptoms occur, and always wear masks, even when others are outdoors. Said you need to. ..

Students can go to school

Morrison said children returning from these states could continue to attend school but should not attend events such as sporting events and birthday parties.

“The changes announced today aren’t forever, for the time being … together, we can do that,” she said.

On the island, Morrison warns the islanders to stay home in case of illness and continue to follow public health guidelines. She added that these new travel restrictions should give people a great deal of freedom to go out and shop locally until Christmas.

“This is our hope. We can keep things as long as we can in the state, but it certainly will be a challenge,” Morrison said.
