A new study shows that 6 out of 10 children are immune, even though they have never been infected with COVID-19.
Results of research published in GAVI.orgShows that children are much more likely to have antibodies to COVID-19 than adults.
Studies show that this may explain why they are unaffected by the virus that causes COVID-19, or have only mild illness.
Antibodies are protective proteins produced by the immune system in response to the presence of foreign substances called antigens (such as coronavirus). Antibodies recognize and latch the antigen and remove it from the body.
According to the report Science We examined people who had never been exposed to the new coronavirus for existing antibodies that bind to spike proteins on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
They also investigated whether those antibodies affected the way the SARS-CoV-2 virus infects cells.
Survey results
Researchers have found that approximately 5% of 302 uninfected adult participants have antibodies that recognize the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
By comparison, 62% of uninfected children aged 6 to 16 had antibodies. This is the age group in which antibodies against the seasonal coronavirus are most common.
In laboratory tests, they also found that existing antibodies blocked the SARS-CoV-2 virus from entering cells.
The spike protein has two subunits, S1 and S2, and researchers have found that S2 is most similar throughout the coronavirus, which is most likely derived from cross-reactive immunity.

Researchers also suggested that research on the S2 subunit may contribute to a universal vaccine against coronavirus.
They said that distinguishing between existing and new immunity to SARS-CoV-2 is important in understanding the response to the COVID-19 vaccine and susceptibility to the virus.
In the meantime, three major competitors have participated in international competition to find vaccines against viruses that have infected more than 60 million people worldwide.
US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech have announced that the vaccine is 95% effective and there are no safety concerns.
Both companies have already applied for an emergency license from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
