Saskatchewan. The government apologizes after an HIV post featuring a photo of a gay couple accused of homophobia

Saskatchewan Health Minister Paul Merriman said it was “sorry” to use photos of gay couples in government social media posts, but agrees with criticism that the posts are homophobic. Did not reach.

“It’s very much what people were seeing when we came up with an image of what AIDS patients were doing on a festive day about how much we reached the treatment for AIDS. I’m sorry, “Meriman said in parliament on Wednesday.

The post was shared on the state government’s Twitter and Facebook feeds on Tuesday, World AIDS Day. The post included images of two men and a message that HIV was treatable, urging people to be tested.

Hundreds of comments on the post have been criticized.

On Wednesday morning it was removed and an apology was posted to the same social media account.

“Yesterday, to commemorate World AIDS Day, the Saskatchewan government’s social media page used photos accusing people living with HIV / AIDS and their illness,” the statement said.

“The photo has been deleted. Please do not hesitate to apologize.”

Merriman said he did not approve the post. It was shared by staff within the Ministry of Health.

“I [Saskatchewan Health Authority CEO] Scott Livingstone confirmed later this afternoon what process he was taking to prevent this from happening again. ”

Saskatchewan is Canada’s country with the highest HIV prevalence.

The most common risk factor for infection in Saskatchewan is syringe drug use, which accounts for 67 percent of cases.

In 16% of cases, the main exposure risk is heterosexual gender. In 9% of cases, the risk factor was in men having sex with men.

Jack Saddleback, interim co-director of OutSaskatoon, said the post did not reflect much in the government’s understanding of the issue.

“This is an old-fashioned, outdated view … and, honestly, it’s a homophobic view when it comes to HIV and AIDS,” Saddleback said.

He said the state should focus on reducing HIV prevalence.

Jason Mercredi, executive director of Prairie Harm Reduction, said the government’s social media posts were “deaf.” (Chelsea Raskowski / CBC)

Prairie Harm Reduction, Previously known As AIDS Saskatoon, it demanded $ 1.3 million from the state government to support a safe injection facility opened in Saskatoon this year, but was not funded.

Secretary-General Jason Mercredi said the World AIDS Day post was “deaf” and unaware of the good efforts made in Saskatchewan to reduce HIV prevalence. ..

“We repeat that the government is not addicted to the same level of seriousness as other problems,” Mercredi said.

“And it hasn’t received the proper attention. The Harm Reduction message should have been at the forefront of the World AIDS Day message in Saskatchewan.”

The proportion of indigenous peoples is high in Saskatchewan.

Statistics on HIV in Saskatchewan also show that indigenous peoples account for 79% of new cases.

Margaret Xikaupiesis, CEO of the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network, said that dealing with the high rates of HIV in the state requires solutions from within the indigenous community.

She will feature social media posts at an upcoming meeting with state officials.

“This really reflects the fact that the government doesn’t care what’s happening in the state,” said Kisikau Piesis.

“The government is not dealing with this in a way that helps indigenous peoples consider solutions to what they see in our community.”

She said grassroots organizations have not received enough money to support people with HIV and AIDS, and indigenous peoples are unlikely to seek help from state authorities for systematic racism.

The number of new HIV diagnoses in Saskatchewan increased by 27% from 168 in 2018 to 213 in 2019. Early data show at least 118 newly diagnosed HIV cases in 2020.
