Quarantine must be strong as the virus rages
The Australian Hotel Quarantine Program must be impenetrable as the COVID-19 pandemic is intensifying across our coast, the country’s top doctor said.
With record deaths and a surge in global coronavirus infection rates, Australia’s Deputy Chief Health Officer Paul Kelly said Australia is in an enviable but delicate position.
Saturday was the eighth consecutive day without community infection. This statistic has not been seen by the country since February.
There are 6 active cases recorded in the last 24 hours in New South Wales, 5 in Victoria, 1 each in Queensland and Washington, and are managed nationwide in hotel quarantine.
The incident in Victoria marked the end of the state’s 42-day virus-free streak.
Professor Kelly said he was “confident” that the Victorian contact tracing system would be revamped and international flights would arrive in Melbourne starting Monday.
He said the focus was on the robustness of the hotel’s quarantine while the vaccine was not deployed.
“We are focused on taking Australians home, but we absolutely need to make sure that the hotel’s quarantine system is the best,” he said.
Professor Kelly said Australia will not do this, despite the US, UK and Canada granting emergency permits for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
“I don’t need a vaccine this year,” said Professor Kelly.
“Other countries are in a very different state from us and should be prioritized.”
Australia waits for its regulatory authority, Therapeutic Goods Authority, to pass its own approval of the Pfizer vaccine in the hope that it will be distributed in early 2021.

Worker Mark Butler said on Saturday that the world’s best practice was to invest in five or six vaccines, encouraging the Morrison government to “do more.”
“The University of Queensland’s options, which haven’t been shown to be safe and effective, have been lost and are now reduced to three,” Butler said.
Meanwhile, the five former prime ministers have offered to be vaccinated against the virus first when the time comes to encourage the public to get the virus.
Professor Kelly questioned whether they would be in the first line of jabs.
He said the priority groups are those at high risk of infection, those at high risk of exposure, and front-line health care workers.
