“A great way to be part of history”: A lineup of volunteers giving the COVID-19 vaccine in Ottawa
As a lineup of front-line healthcare professionals receiving the Ottawa-Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, other healthcare professionals are volunteering to be on the other side of the syringe that administers the vaccine.
The Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus was home to the history of hundreds of healthcare workers vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine this week.
Dr. Cheryl Hodison is a general internal medicine intern at Ottawa Hospital. She has been working on what she calls a pandemic an “interesting experience.”
“There are a lot of fears about this (COVID-19), and of course I think so,” says Hodison. “For those who come to the hospital later, there is no doubt that they are ill and have mental health problems … people do not have the support network they had.”
When Canada announced that the COVID-19 vaccine would be available, the hospital turned to a medical trainee for help.
“I was in the clinic yesterday. Everyone from nurses to guards, doctors, porters and cleaners is volunteering and helping everyone,” says Hodison. “I thought this was a great way to be part of history. This vaccine is here. We manage and hopefully end this pandemic that has really impacted everyone’s lives. can do.”
In Ottawa, front-line healthcare professionals in long-term sanatoriums are vaccinated first.
