There are similarities between the coronavirus pandemic and the fight against HIV decades ago, says Dr. Michael McBride.
The Chief Medical Officer of Northern Ireland worked early in his career as part of an effort to treat HIV-infected persons in London and Belfast.
After graduating from Queen’s University Belfast in 1986, Dr. McBride worked as a researcher at St. Mary’s Medical College and Imperial College London, researching new drug treatments for HIV.
He described a similar experience of fighting a new virus and suddenly making people feel sick.
“This is a new virus and I knew little from the beginning. There was no cure,” he told PA Media.
“At that stage, I didn’t even know what caused people to get sick. I knew that my immune system was damaged, but what was the cause of my immune system damage? I wasn’t sure. Virus level. “

“There were many similarities in this pandemic. Thankfully, there are vaccines that are effective at this stage. There are vaccines 10 months after the first outbreak, and we are developing effective treatments. I can’t believe it is.
“There is also a difference. Sadly, HIV was so stigmatized that we didn’t have the same stigma associated with Covid. But there’s a lot we don’t know about this virus yet, and we I’m still doing that.
“Thankfully, HIV is a chronic treatable disease that can be prevented by treatment.”
