Texas sets another record for COVID-19 hospitalization
The number of Texas people hospitalized for COVID-19 for the second time in the new year is higher than ever.
Texas reported 12,563 people in the hospital for the disease on Sunday. This is 82 more than the previous high on New Year’s Day.
This is the sixth hospitalization record in the last seven days, as Texas is working on a second wave of COVID-19, which surpassed a record high in July.
Troublesome hospitalizations have occurred as Texas citizens have begun to be vaccinated. Health officials say they will eventually curb the spread of the disease. As of Sunday, the state reported that 377,050 people had been vaccinated.
Most of the people who fired are healthcare professionals who started taking it three weeks ago. Others fall into the second category of qualified people aged 65 and over or 16 and over.
Austin’s pharmacies and hospitals said there were no doses available and were waiting for additional shipments, but the state approved the group to be vaccinated on Tuesday.
According to the state, 17,741 people in Travis County are receiving the first dose of the vaccine. They will not be fully vaccinated until a second vaccination a few weeks later.
Overall, Texas reported 14,535 new confirmed cases on Sunday. Travis County accounts for 398 of these cases, the lowest total locally since December 27.
There were 484 patients admitted to the Austin metropolitan area in the five counties, 151 of whom were in the intensive care unit. No new Austin deaths from the virus were recorded, as the total number during the pandemic remained at 550.
Fifty new deaths associated with COVID-19 in Texas were reported on Sunday, bringing the state to a total of 27,917.
Infections caused by the New Year’s Eve party will not be reflected in the new number of cases for the next few days.
