“Peanut allergies more common than Pfizer vaccine allergies”
Health experts say that such food allergies from peanuts are more common than severe allergic reactions to Covid-19’s Pfizer vaccine.
Consultant pediatrician and neonatologist Datuk Dr Musa Mohd Nordin states that the risk of peanut allergies is about 30,000 in 1 million.
“It can occur 6,500 times more than an allergic reaction to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
“But that didn’t prevent us from eating peanuts,” he points out.
For the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, the risk is 4.6 per million, Dr. Musa adds.
This is relatively higher than most pediatric vaccines, which have a one-millionth risk of severe allergic reactions.
But Dr. Musa uses the example of a peanut allergy to say that people have to look at things.
However, he says, people who have an anaphylactic reaction with other drugs, insects such as Hornet or food, vaccines, or the first dose of Pfizer vaccine should refrain from taking Pfizer vaccine.
“You can still get other types of Covid-19 vaccine, including the AstraZeneca vaccine,” Dr. Musa adds.
If you are allergic to food, medicine, bites, eczema, etc., you should stay near the hospital or clinic for at least 30 minutes after vaccination.
“It’s very rare, but if it happens, it happens within the first 30 minutes, and this can easily be undone with prompt medical treatment,” Dr. Musa emphasizes.
In general, the most common types of side effects of vaccines are pain at the injection site, headache, malaise, and muscle aches, he says.
“There may be fever, swelling, and tenderness at the injection site.
“In fact, all these AEFIs (post-vaccination adverse events) disappear after a day or two,” he adds.
Dr. Musa explains that this indicates the body’s immune system that responds to the vaccine by producing protective antibodies.
“This inflammatory response produces mediators called cytokines, which are responsible for the local and systemic effects experienced after the shot.
“Doctors are excited to see these signs because they know that their body is moving and doing the right thing.
“This means that the coronavirus will produce protective antibodies and immune memory cells that can memorize the coronavirus whenever it is attacked in the future.
“But if you feel in the post-vaccination weather, you can take paracetamol to reduce fever and pain,” he advises.
After receiving the jab, Datuk Dr Subramaniam Muniandy, President of the Malaysian Medical Association, advises you to keep plenty of water and take paracetamol if you have pain or have a severe fever.
“Vaccines conditionally approved by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) are extremely safe.
“There are currently no vaccines on the market, so don’t be fooled by those who provide the vaccine for a fee,” he warns.
