Lincoln, Nevada (KOLN)- The Brian Medical Center uses convalescent plasma to treat COVID-19 patients in Lincoln. According to Brian pathologist Dr. Aina Silenieks, three patients at the Brian Medical Center are being treated with convalescent plasma.
Convalescent plasma is plasma recovered from a person who has recovered from the disease, in this case COVID-19. More recently, it has been used to manage patients with SARS, MERS, and Ebola.
Dr. Silenieks said there is a belief that there may be antibodies in the plasma that can help patients with serious or life-threatening illnesses. The results are the best and the study shows that there were no significant complications.
As of April 6, Brian Medical Center is a registered participant in the Convalescent Plasma Program based in the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Silenieks said the multidisciplinary team at Brian Medical Center is involved in the program.
Participation in the program is very limited. In order to receive plasma, patients must be at least 19 years old and have lab-validated COVID-19. Patients must be admitted to an acute care facility for a serious or life-threatening illness or at risk of developing a serious or life-threatening illness.
According to Dr. Silenieks, three patients at Bryan Medical Center participated in the program last week. All plasma used to treat these patients comes from the New York Blood Center.
Both New York Blood Center and the Nebraska Community Blood Bank are part of Innovative Blood Resources. Innovative blood resources are expanding access to special products, services and expertise for Lincoln patients.
If the patient agreed to participate in the study, it took less than a day for Brian Medical Center to receive the required plasma.
Dr Silenieks said it was too early to determine if convalescent plasma was beneficial to the three patients. She said that patients treated with this plasma are often very ill and are treated with multiple medical problems. It may take a week or more before the effects of plasma appear.
Health officials have emphasized the limited availability of plasma and the program relies entirely on the generosity of those who have recovered from COVID-19.
