Italian scientists have detected and identified the presence of the COVID-19-specific gene in samples collected from one city and one industrial site in the province of Bergamo. Detection was also confirmed in an independent laboratory.
This work was led by Leonardo Setti of the University of Bologna, Italy, and he said it was important to investigate whether the virus could become more widespread due to air pollution without sufficient evidence. “I’m a scientist and I’m worried when I don’t know,” he said. “If we know, we can find a solution, but if we don’t, we can only suffer consequences,” Seti said in a report by the Guardians.
Other research groups have also suggested that coronaviruses can be transmitted via contaminating particles.
Previous studies have shown that air pollution particles mask microbes and that pollution is likely to carry avian influenza, measles, and foot-and-mouth disease virus over significant distances.
