7 year old boy celebrates birthday after cancer and survival of COVID-19 – CBS Boston

Dedham (CBS) —It was a long birthday celebration as a little boy in Dedham was seven years old after fighting cancer and the coronavirus. He and his family have experienced more than most of us can imagine. But they made it on the other side with the help of their community.

“Happy Birthday!” As the party parade rolled down the street, police officers called the police car loudspeakers to celebrate his birthday and move with love and hope for Gavin Brennan.

“It feels good. I’m glad I got home,” Gavin said.

Diagnosed with lymphoma, he started chemotherapy in January. After that, the coronavirus became a hit.

“The first curve ball was cancer. The second was a pandemic and the third was a COVID,” Gavin’s mother April Brennan said.

It was a time when testing for coronaviruses was very limited. “Thanks to God my husband pushed and he pushed to take the COVID test,” April Brennan said.

Gavin tested positive but had no symptoms, so after two weeks of isolation, chemotherapy was resumed. “At that time, pneumonia grew an ugly head,” said April Brennan.

Gavin’s second test gave him a second positive. “It was the worst nightmare of the father and mother to get two positive COVID tests,” Brennan in April.

But on Thursday, Gavin celebrated his birthday and not only survived the coronavirus, but also finished his last round of chemotherapy.

“We’re really excited. It was a long and noisy road here, but being at home and behind the scenes is really good,” said Gavin’s father, Tim Brennan.

“It will be an exciting time to celebrate life,” said April Brennan.
