The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing a third wave of coronavirus infection, with its epicenter in Kinshasa, one of Africa’s most populous cities, Health Minister Jean-Jack Mubungani said Thursday. ..
Like many other African countries, Congo officially reports relatively low cases and deaths, but health officials are concerned about the recent surge in infections.
“We will officially announce the beginning of the third wave of the COVID-10 pandemic in our country, where Kinshasa is the epicenter,” Mubungani told reporters.
Low vaccination rates and unplanned adherence to recommended hygiene practices are one of the reasons for the increased infection rates, he said.
On Wednesday, the World Health Organization said it was concerned about the spread of India’s first identified delta subspecies in Kinshasa, which is believed to be more contagious.
According to the WHO, the infection rate of Kinshasa increased exponentially in the week leading up to May 30.
Congolese vaccination campaign stagnated after delaying rollout due to safety concerns about AstraZeneca (AZN.L) shot. As a result, approximately 75% of the 1.7 million doses received in March were reassigned the following month to ensure that they were used before they expired.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, a total of more than 31,900 infections and 786 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in Congo.
Officials said last week that the victims included 32 parliamentarians, or about 5% of the total number of deaths from the virus. read more
