Sleep apnea is associated with increased diabetes risk in black Americans
New study Monday, May 4, 2020 (HealthDay News) -Black Americans with severe sleep apnea and other sleep problems are at risk of high blood sugar levels that can lead to diabetes Is high.
The researchers looked at sleep patterns and blood glucose levels in 789 men and women with an average age of 63 who were enrolled in the Jackson Heart Study, the largest study of cardiovascular disease in black Americans.
One-quarter of the participants had type 2 diabetes. 20% were taking diabetes drugs. And 57% were diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, but not treated.
People with severe apnea were found to have 14% higher fasting blood glucose levels than those without sleep apnea. Severe sleep apnea was also associated with higher HbA1c levels. HbA1C is an indicator of average glycemic control over 2-3 months.
Research found that the association between apnea and hyperglycemia was stronger in men than in women. Black men with severe sleep apnea had 10% higher fasting blood glucose levels than black women with severe apnea.
Other types of sleep problems-including sleep fragmentation and fluctuations in sleep time-were also associated with elevated blood sugar levels, the link being the strongest in diabetics and published online on April 28. According to research American Heart Association Magazine.
Findings suggest that better sleep may help prevent and manage type 2 diabetes in black Americans at higher risk than other groups. However, the study only found an association and could not prove the cause and effect.
The researchers concluded that it was important to screen black Americans for sleep apnea.
“This study underscores the importance of developing interventions to promote regular sleep schedules, especially in diabetics,” said lead author and family medicine at Duke University in Durham, NC. Dr. Yuichiro Yano, an assistant professor of community medicine, said.
