Median Salary in America's 25 Largest Cities: See How You Compare

In some of America's largest cities, earning six figures is not a benchmark; it has become the norm.

According to a new analysis from GoBankingRates, median household income is over $100,000 in six cities, including four in California. In San Francisco, at least half of households earn $146,872, the highest of any city.

Here's a look at the 10 wealthiest U.S. cities, based on household income data from the 2022 U.S. Census, adjusted to 2024 dollars:

The median income for the 50 largest U.S. cities as a whole is $77,046, which is more in line with the average income for most Americans. By 2024, the median annual household income is estimated to be $78,171, according to data consultancy Motio Research.

But income levels can vary widely from city to city. In Detroit, which ranks 30th in population, the median income is $40,574. That's the lowest of any city and more than $100,000 less than the median income in San Francisco.

This disparity largely reflects the concentration of the wealthiest Americans in a few of the country's largest cities. According to market research firm New World Wealth, San Francisco has 305,700 millionaires, second only to New York City, which has 349,500.

Wealthier cities also tend to have a large number of high-paying jobs in technology, finance, entertainment, and health care. Land shortages are also a factor, limiting new housing construction and driving up real estate prices, which can price low-income buyers out of the market.
