More than 130,000 people across the country will be better protected against diseases such as heart disease, kidney disease and diabetes as the government introduces the first-ever life-saving health screening programme for workplaces nationwide today (August 30, 2024).

These tests, which employees can complete quickly and easily in the workplace, record a wealth of information about each patient, which is used to determine cardiovascular risk.

Employers from a variety of industries, including construction, hospitality and transportation, and social services, are expected to participate in the program.

Today’s announcement is part of the Secretary of State’s commitment to supporting the government’s mission to improve the health of the population and drive economic growth.

As all tests provide the same service as an NHS appointment, these tests will save thousands of valuable hours in the NHS, reducing waiting lists and helping to rebuild the NHS.

Andrew Gwynne, Minister for Health and Prevention, said:

We know that many deadly diseases can be avoided if help is sought in a timely manner, which is why we are working to improve access to treatment and take action to address preventable causes of cardiovascular disease.

This innovative new programme is a key step towards delivering community-led healthcare, improving health and supporting economic and productivity, shifting the focus from treatment to prevention, easing the burden on the NHS and helping people live longer, healthier lives.

More than 16 million people are eligible for an NHS health check, but current data shows that only about 40% of those invited have completed the check. This is particularly true for men, who are less likely to get help early but are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease at a younger age than women. This new programme aims to reach more people through the workplace and make it easier for people to understand and improve their cardiovascular health.

David Hargroves, NHS National Clinical Lead for Stroke, said:

Convenient and efficient NHS screening at work could catch thousands of people at risk for a range of cardiovascular diseases, and with high blood pressure being the biggest risk factor for stroke, early detection could undoubtedly save lives.

This new programme demonstrates the NHS’s commitment to disease prevention and urges anyone who has been asked to come forward and get support to improve their cardiovascular health.

Councillor Louis Gittins, chairman of the Local Government Association, said:

Health checkups can save lives. They can prevent the development of largely preventable diseases such as heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and liver disease.

The council is exploring new ways to increase uptake among high-risk individuals and communities, and is using proactive outreach programs to reach communities that are less likely to attend regular medical care.

But more can be done, and if local governments and employers work together, more people can get health screenings and prevent illness later in life.

The Government also announced today the development of a new digital version of the NHS Health Check, which will be trialled in early 2025.

The service is available via the NHS app, allowing users to take health checks at home and have their results automatically recorded in their GP's electronic health record with just a few clicks.

Local authorities in Norfolk (East England), Medway (South East) and Lambeth (London) have been selected to pilot a new digital health check in early 2025.

The digital programme will deliver around one million tests over its first four years. Plans are being drawn up to roll out the digital NHS Health Check nationally alongside the face-to-face programme to give patients more choice.
