Massive solidarity demonstration outside St Thomas Hospital for detained Palestinian medical staff

179 people wearing surgical scrubs held a powerful vigil to highlight the plight of Palestinian medical workers detained by Israeli forces.

Protesters demanded the release of surgeon Dr Khaled al-Ser, who was detained by Israeli forces at the Khan Younis Nasser hospital, and an end to British arms supplies to Israel.

Juliet Stevenson and Richard Ratcliffe spoke about the protest.

Amnesty International UK and Palestinian health workers staged a massive solidarity demonstration outside St Thomas’ Hospital in London to highlight the ongoing suffering of 179 Palestinian health workers, most of whom are from the Gaza Strip, who are being held without charge or trial by Israeli authorities.

Those taking part outside the central London hospital included Dr Ghassan Abu Sitta, Dr Khaled Dawas, Amira Nimerawy, Dr Rebecca Inglis, Professor Nick Maynard, Dr Deborah Harrington and Dr James Smith.

During the stunt, actress Juliet Stevenson read a statement from a recently released Palestinian medical worker, while human rights activist Richard Ratcliffe addressed the protest, saying the Palestinian medical workers were effectively being held hostage by Israeli authorities.

At the demonstration, held on the International Day of the Missing, 179 people knelt in distinctive medical scrubs, a visual reminder of the disturbing images from Gaza where Israeli forces are holding Palestinian detainees. The medical staff held up A4-sized letters spelling out FREE GAZA MEDICS and the names and occupations of some of the detained Palestinians.

Other placards from the protest included “Free Dr. Khaled Al-Ser.” Dr. Al-Ser is a Palestinian surgeon at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis who was detained by Israeli forces along with other medical staff in March. He was reportedly beaten repeatedly by Israeli soldiers and guards, and has not been charged or given any other information about the reasons for his detention or his current legal status.

Despite mounting evidence that Israeli forces are committing war crimes in Gaza and increasing signs of mass killings, Britain has refused to stop arms transfers to Israel. The medical workers at the protest also held up STOP ARMING ISRAEL placards, demanding that Britain immediately stop arms transfers to Israel.

Dr. Rebecca Inglis, a critical care physician who has been visiting Gaza since 2017 to teach medical students and junior doctors and help organize today’s stunt, said:

The deliberate targeting of doctors, nurses and paramedics is completely unforgivable. As medical professionals, we are appalled by the abduction of many medical workers from hospitals or ambulances while on duty, and their continued detention and torture. Israel is completely ignoring the specific protections that should be afforded to medical workers in times of conflict, and is repeatedly and blatantly violating international humanitarian law.

Tom Goohar, Amnesty International's crisis response campaigner in the UK, said:

The plight of Dr. Khaled Al-Ser and countless other Palestinian medical workers detained by Israel is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. These dedicated medical workers, who are needed now more than ever, have been lost to Israel. The UK government must demand that Israel reveal their whereabouts and release them immediately.

Torture in Israeli detention facilities

There are many reports of Palestinians being tortured and abused while detained in Gaza and held indefinitely by Israeli authorities. Last month, Amnesty documented the cases of 27 former Palestinian detainees held for up to four and a half months without access to lawyers or families. Among those detained was a doctor who was held in a hospital for refusing to abandon a patient.
