The third major of the year is only three weeks away and there are only two viable paths left to qualify. The first is to enter the top 60 of the official world golf rankings on June 15, the day after the RBC Canadian Open. And the second is to earn a spot in the US Open final qualifier on “Golf’s Longest Day” (June 8).

Many notable names are found outside. Let’s review five of them.

Official World Golf Ranking: 103rd

The last time Shinnecock Hills Golf Club hosted the U.S. Open, Tony Finau played in the final group on Sunday. Finau is fighting to get the starting time he can get this year.

Finau was part of a four-way tie for the lead heading into the final round of the 2018 US Open, alongside future champion Brooks Koepka, Daniel Berger and Dustin Johnson.

Finau ultimately finished tied for fifth, making three bogeys on his first four holes to drop out of contention. This is one of the first five major rankings of Finau’s career.

This form seems far away for Finau at the moment, even if he has just achieved the best result of his season and his first top 10 in over a year. He shot 67-63-69-65 to place sixth at the CJ CUP Byron Nelson. This result strengthens his world ranking, but he remains outside the top 100 and far from qualification. Without continuing this form at Colonial Country Club this week, Finau’s only path will be through the final qualifiers.

Tony Finau reaches the par-5 No. 12 in two and makes a birdie at the CJ CUP

Earlier this year, Finau failed to qualify for the Masters and ended a streak of seven consecutive appearances. Finau has played in seven consecutive US Opens and is in danger of ending that streak as well.

Official World Golf Ranking: 76th

The reigning Rookie of the Year is not yet present at the US Open. This is a bit surprising, considering his strong play this season and his participation in many marquee events. He showed his merit at the PGA Championship, tied for third after 36 holes. If Potgieter had maintained that position, he would have automatically qualified for the US Open, but he fell back this weekend and finished outside the top 30. He is now fighting for a place in the third major of the season.

At 76th place in the OWGR, Potgieter has a route to the top 60, although final qualifying is the more likely route. Potgieter is not in the field at Colonial and is currently not qualified for the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday.

Official World Golf Ranking: 62nd

The American is the highest-ranked player in the Official World Golf Rankings yet to be exempt for Shinnecock Hills, currently just outside the top 60. However, surpassing that threshold will be harder than it seems.

To start, Greyserman had a great week in Dallas, finishing T9, but only moved up one spot in the rankings. He’s playing in the Charles Schwab Challenge again this week, but he’s not exempt from next week’s Memorial Tournament, while several others just behind him in the world rankings are in the field. This requires a good performance in Texas or Canada in two weeks. Greyserman can also qualify via final qualifiers.

Greyserman performed well in limited major championship experience. He was tied for third through 36 holes at the PGA Championship earlier this month, ultimately finishing tied for 14th. In seven major starts as a professional, Greyserman has made five cuts and finished no worse than T33 on the weekend. He has three top-25 finishes.

It would be especially meaningful to qualify for the U.S. Open at Shinnecock. Greyserman is far from a hometown kid, but he was born in New Jersey, just a stone’s throw from Newark Airport, and would surely benefit from plenty of local support.

Official World Golf Ranking: 123rd

If Homa misses this US Open, it would be the first time he misses a major in consecutive years since becoming a mainstay on the PGA TOUR in 2021. Homa notably missed last year’s US Open by losing in a playoff on “golf’s longest day”, so he knows the razor’s edge of building on this path.

To avoid it, Homa will have to win one of the next three weeks. He showed that the best form was still there with a T9 at the Masters, but he hasn’t maintained that level since. He struggled at the RBC Heritage, Cadillac and Truist Championships, finishing no better than T38, and missed the cut at the PGA Championship.

Homa is on the field at Colonial this week. He has a top 10 in six appearances there.

Official World Golf Ranking: 70th

Højgaard played in the Ryder Cup last fall, but is not at the US Open. He is the only player from either team not currently exempt from the third major tournament of the year.

It’s the product of a poorly timed dip in form. Højgaard started 2026 in the world top 40, but was unable to maintain that position in time for US Open qualification as he struggled to start the year. Højgaard’s tie for ninth at the Cognizant Classic at The Palm Beaches is his only top 20 finish this season. And even though he’s been playing better lately – six straight cuts – it hasn’t been enough to stay in the top 60.
