EU calls for UK rejoining, saying it ‘doesn’t care’ about Labor

Europeans are dismayed by Britain’s sudden demand to rejoin the European Union and most capitals are not interested in pursuing a deal, according to senior diplomats and officials in Brussels and London.

Despite Britain’s ruling Labor Party leaders discussing rejoining the bloc and London’s proposal to create a single market for goods with the EU, there is no appetite on the European side to intensify talks.

Few EU capitals are paying close attention to this situation, and no country apart from France, Ireland and the Netherlands is actively interested in fundamentally reviewing the current post-Brexit trade deal with the UK, which is seen as stable and well-functioning.

A source close to contacts in London and Brussels said: “There is nothing to say. It is not on the agenda and it is difficult to resolve. Europeans as a whole cannot care at all.”

The indifference of EU countries means the European Commission has no authority to start wide-ranging talks, and officials have rejected London’s proposals as “inconsistent”, according to sources.

Earlier this month, the UK’s chief negotiator, Michael Ellam, presented plans to create a single goods market in a “rewind” of the UK’s earlier attempt to “cherry pick,” according to European sources. The idea was rejected unless Britain agreed to a new customs union with the EU.

One diplomat said, “London has put forward a proposal reminiscent of the magical thinking of the Theresa May era, but it is unconvincing.”

Another Brussels source said: “Starmer’s team appears to be ignoring all the lessons and experience gained on the British side during the last stages of Brexit talks. This is not helpful at all.”

In addition to recent European indifference and rejection of Britain’s approach, British politics are seen as unstable and toxic.

The Labor prime minister’s term appears to be numbered, but there is no indication that a likely successor, including a senior supporter of EU rejoining, will be strong or stable enough to take charge of the negotiations.

Manchester mayor Andy Burnham is the favorite to replace Starmer, but he must first fight difficult by-elections in constituencies in northern England and has firmly ruled out any talks with the EU over rejoining the bloc.
