Vaccination of new cases of COVID positive rate in Monroe County
The Rochester-Monroe County Health Department, NY, reported a seven-day moving average positive rate of 2.0% in Monroe County for the week leading up to July 25. The last positive rate of 2% was on May 29th. The positive rate for the week up to July 18 was 1.2%. There were three new deaths announced by the county health department.
Since July 19, there have been 222 newly confirmed COVID cases. There were 139 positive cases in the previous week’s report.
Increasing case numbers cause concern
The Monroe County Health Department reported another 53 cases on Monday. At a press conference, public health commissioner Dr. Mike Mendoza said an increasing population of unvaccinated people were infected with the virus.
And he said there was no way to get the exact number, but “a significant portion of the new case is likely to be from the (locally) delta variant.”
Mendoza called for continued promotion to get more people vaccinated, so “there is a chance to contain it before the school closes in September.”
Dr. Emil Resho, an infectious disease specialist at Rochester Regional Health, said that while the number of people currently hospitalized is small, none of the people currently hospitalized for COVID at Rochester General Hospital have been vaccinated. ..
Strong Memorial Hospital has less than 10 patients with active COVID infection, the lowest since last summer. But Dr. Paul Grumman, clinical director of Strong’s Infectious Diseases Division, is worried that it could change.
“We are worried about the increasing number of cases in the community,” Grumman said. “I’m worried about what’s going to happen because hospitalization will be delayed for a few weeks.”
According to Mendoza, Monroe County is doing well compared to many parts of the country because it has a higher overall immunization rate than areas that are primarily outbreaks like Florida.
But he said it was important to keep more people vaccinated.
“Vaccines are much safer than getting a COVID,” Mendoza said. “Vaccinated people have not appeared in hospitals and could spread it to unvaccinated people, including children under the age of 12 and those who cannot be vaccinated due to underlying illness. It is low.”
