K-6 students in Allegan County now need masks

Allegan County — In a joint order with Kalamazoo County, the Allegan County Health Department has announced that it has ordered all students from kindergarten to sixth grade to wear masks in school buildings.

The announcement made on Wednesday will be just a week after ACHD Guidance for the first return to school A mask is highly recommended, but not required.

High vaccination rates are the best way to prevent infections in schools, the department said. By mandating masks in grade K-6, this order is intended for students under the age of 12 who are not yet vaccinated.

This order applies to students over the age of 5 from kindergarten to 6th grade. Students under the age of 5 do not need to wear a mask, but it is recommended.

Persons servicing students in these grades, such as teachers, volunteers, coaches, administrative staff, and students in grades 6 and above, should also wear masks.

This applies to daycare centers, tutoring centers, kindergartens, elementary and junior high schools, vocational schools and universities in the county.

Masks are not required while eating or on the go unless the person is engaged in direct physical contact activities. According to federal orders, students of all ages are required to wear a mask on the bus.

The Allegan County order takes effect immediately and is valid until six weeks after the COVID-19 vaccine is approved and available to people between the ages of 5 and 11 or until notification from the county.
