10 Malawi students to the UK on Chevening Scholarships

Acting British High Commissioner Fiona Ritchie hosted a dispatch reception for 10 Malawi Chevening scholars who will be heading to the UK this month to begin postgraduate studies at top universities for the 2021/22 academic year on Tuesday 31 August 2021. Deputy Minister of Education Madalitso Wirima Kambauwa represented the Government of Malawi at an event at the High Commissioner’s Office in Lilongwe.

Chevening is the UK Government’s global scholarship program that offers future leaders a unique opportunity to study in the UK. This scholarship is awarded to outstanding professionals who can earn a one-year master’s degree in any subject at a UK university.

This year’s winners will study courses ranging from data science and artificial intelligence, construction management and engineering to sustainable development.

Acting UK High Commissioner Fiona Ritchie, speaking at the reception welcoming the 2019/20 cohort home, said more than 50,000 eligible applications had been submitted, of which 10% made it through the interview stage.

Ritchie said UK universities promote creativity and information exchange, as well as knowledge and network building.
