Dead birds found in Pleasanton have been tested positive for the West Nile virus, according to the Alameda County Mosquito Eradication District.
The bird, tested on September 27, is the first sign of an active virus infection in the county this year. In response, the area is stepping up its efforts to monitor mosquitoes and control larvae in areas where birds have been found. West Nile virus is bitten by infected mosquitoes and infects humans and animals.
“As the seasons change, residents may think that mosquitoes are no longer a threat, but this is usually the time when we see an increase in West Nile virus in our county,” said General Manager Ryan Klaus. Nitzer says. “Although it rains in the morning and warm in the afternoon, mosquitoes still have plenty of breeding and breeding opportunities.”
Clausnitzer urged residents to remove accumulated water from their property and to protect them from mosquito bites by wearing repellents and long, loose clothing.
“We haven’t detected a large number of mosquitoes in the areas where the birds were found, but each mosquito bite increases the risk of West Nile virus,” says Clausnitzer.
As of Monday, 57 people in California tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the mosquito district. Symptoms include fever, headache, body pain, joint pain, vomiting, and rash. There is no known cure for the virus, but less than 1% of infected people develop serious neurological disorders such as encephalitis and meningitis.
