Strong earthquake strikes southwest Pakistan

At least 20 people were killed and more than 200 injured after a strong earthquake of 5.7 magnitude in southwest Pakistan early Thursday morning.

The US Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was about 100 km east of Quetta near the Afghan border, and its epicenter was 20 km below the surface.

The coal-mining town of Harnai in Balochistan province suffered the brunt of the earthquake. The earthquake caused up to 100 mud houses to collapse, and many residents were trapped inside as they slept. Television footage showed people running out of their homes in panic as buildings shook. Authorities say the victims include women and children.

Officials said it would take hours to reach many of the hardest-hit areas in the coal mining region. The Pakistani army said its troops and helicopters were helping the civilian authorities in carrying out the rescue efforts.

The massive blackout forced rescue workers to use flashlights to treat the wounded in hospitals.

The strong tremors triggered landslides in two places on the main highway linking Quetta to Harnai, according to the National Disaster Management Authority.
