Maricopa County reports a record number of West Nile cases
New data posted reports a record number of human West Nile fever cases in the state’s largest county.
Maricopa County currently reports 361 cases of West Nile fever in humans, surpassing the 2004 record of 355 cases.
At the end of September, health authorities in Maricopa County shared a record number of cases for over 15 years.
2004: 355 humans
2019: 155 humans
2020: A total of 3 cases in humans
2021: As of October 7, 361 humans
In addition to 361 new cases, Maricopa County health officials have reported a total of 19 deaths.
At the end of last month, Maricopa County officials said the mosquito season still remained for a few months.
The Maricopa County Environmental Services Department has hundreds of traps around the county and is also testing West Nile fever mosquitoes.
As of Friday, there are 716 West Nile fever-positive samples of mosquitoes tested from these traps. That number is much higher than any other year, including 2019 when county authorities reported 417 positive samples.
Experts provide tips on how to fight bites when it comes to mosquitoes.
- You need to use an EPA-registered insect repellent and make sure that the windows and doors that can be left open have an insect repellent screen.
- Long-sleeved shirts and long pants help keep mosquitoes away from the skin.
- Protect your home by eliminating the water that collects where mosquitoes lay their eggs.
- Small amounts of water in flowerpots, buckets, flipped children’s toys, or other potential basins can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
- Accumulated water that cannot be disposed of can usually be treated with pesticides available at hardware stores.

- Do not leave the outside water for more than 4 days.
- Change the water in the animal aqueduct at least twice a week.
- Immediately remove any water that collects on the pool cover.
- Remove leaves and twigs from eaves, valleys, storms and gutters.

Health officials say people who are experiencing flu-like or neurological symptoms should seek medical care and can ask their health care provider for a West Nile virus test.
