An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck off the province of North Sulawesi in the eastern part of Indonesia on Saturday, a disaster agency and disaster official said, but there was no initial report on casualties or losses.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency has not issued any tsunami warning because the earthquake is not likely to cause giant waves.

The agency said the quake jolted at 9:37 pm Jakarta time (1437 GMT), with its epicenter 71 km southeast of Bulang Mungondo district and at a depth of 20 km under the seabed.

Regional Disaster Management Agency chief Joy Oroh said there were no initial reports of damage or people killed by the quake.

In the two worst-hit areas, Bulang Mungondo Timor district and Kutamobgo town, the official said he had not received any report of damage or losses after the quake.

Indonesia, a vast archipelagic country, is frequently hit by earthquakes because it is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
