Kaikōura Council offers price mitigation options to sweeten the planned increase

Kaikoura residents who are struggling to pay for their prices in the downturn after providing more time to pay – and fewer penalties if they are late – will have at least for this year.

If they still had unpaid rates until June 30 next year, they would pay a penalty of 3 percent, for a limited time.

Council members voted last week to make the Mayoral earthquake relief fund available to reduce rates.

Finance Director Sherrill Paulson said the fund has about $ 24,000 remaining, and people will be able to apply for a grant of up to $ 500 to go to the interest rate bill.

“The demands for the earthquake have gone down dramatically, but families are beginning to suffer hardship as a result of Covid-19.

“It seems reasonable to apply this money to help those in need.”

Paulson said that the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the local economy dramatically and its full effects remain unclear.

She said the council aims to reduce interest rates to enable the rat pushers most affected by managing their cash flow, but they cannot afford more.

“The Kaikoura region is still recovering from the 2016 earthquake and cannot provide significant interest rates to any sector of society.
