Tararua Council notifies property owners of earthquake resistance

Many companies in Tararua cities such as Dannevirke will receive notifications to promote their buildings

Tararua County Council has sent letters to owners of commercial and multi-unit properties notifying them of the need to proof their buildings against earthquakes.

Letters are sent out in two batches with the first batch being sent out on Tuesday, and the second batch coming out in July.

The owners were asked to perform a seismic assessment of their property and report the results to the council.

If hazardous buildings are identified, the council will notify property owners of the steps needed to make their properties compliant.

The requirements that must be met are set out in the Building Alterations (Buildings Vulnerable to Earthquake) Act 2016, which requires councils to identify, assess and produce judgments regarding potentially unsafe buildings in their areas.

The council said it was available to business owners to discuss the process and provide assistance when needed.

Tararoa has not experienced a major earthquake greater than 6.0 since the 1990 Weber earthquake, but the area lies on a major fault line and is one of the most vulnerable areas in the country.

Dannevirke in particular has many heritage buildings dating back to the first half of the 20th century.

As in Christchurch in 2010 and 2011, many of these buildings have brick facades that could pose a safety hazard in the event of an earthquake unless reinforced.
