America has a massive problem with child marriage

Almost every state in the United States allows child marriage. Sometimes, accused of marrying the person who raped them, child rapists avoid accusations. At other times parents may, in fact, force their children to marry.

It’s a global affair – one in five girls around the world is married to a child but you might be surprised to learn that nearly 250,000 children were married in the U.S. in the first ten years of this century.

In this, we look at what child marriage in the U.S. is, why it’s legal, and what campaigns are being pursued to address what they see as child abuse.
