USC Program Offers Free Colorectal Cancer Screening
Colon cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in South Carolina, but doctors say it is one of the most preventable cancers.
Columbia, South Carolina — Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in South Carolina.
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. One of the goals of this initiative is to encourage people to be screened for colon cancer because it can save lives.
In South Carolina USC Colorectal Cancer Prevention Network We work with doctors to provide eligible adults with free screening.
One of those doctors is Dr. March Seabrook, a West Columbia gastroenterologist. While looking at the pictures from the colonoscopy, Seabrook pointed out what a healthy and unhealthy lining of the colon would look like.
Seabrook told News 19 that colon cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death, but one of the most preventable forms. According to Seabrook, the key to prevention is screening.
“Colorectal cancer is partly unknown, whether it’s our lifestyle, what we eat, what we’re exposed to, or genetics, but at least demographically, more. We know that we are detecting many cancers early, “Seabrook explained.

Free colon cancer screening is offered in more than 120 clinics throughout the state. Network director Annie Tibaud said that if someone is uninsured and below the 200% poverty line, they are eligible for the program. For individuals, that means earning less than $ 34,000 a year.
“Colorectal cancer is usually known to be one of the asymptomatic cancers, and screening is so important that we target asymptomatic patients,” says Thibault.
This program helps about 900 people to screen for free each year.
