UK earthquake: Panic hits country with ‘very rare’ earthquake of magnitude 5.1 | United Kingdom | News

The tremor, triggered by a 5.1-magnitude quake, was felt in parts of northern Scotland. People reported that their homes “checked” and that the earthquake woke them up. According to the British Geological Survey (BGS), it has been felt in Shetland, Aberdeen, Elon, Stonehaven, Helmsdale, Inverery, Lerg, Huntley, Banff and Fraserburg.

She reported that people said they “were lying in bed and heard a low roar”.

Another report noted “three waves of shaking in about three seconds,” while a third said “woke me up when windows vibrated.”

A fourth report stated that “the bed shook and windows shattered,” while a fifth said “the mirror shook.”

Another added that he “felt it as he heard it,” saying it was “enough to wake me up.”

The earthquake originated 180 km northeast of Shetland.

The US Geological Survey said more than 70 people reported feeling the quake, which lasted about two minutes.

According to BGS, the UK experiences approximately 200 to 300 earthquakes each year.

However, most of them are too small to be noticed.

“Earthquakes are very rare, of course, but they are not unheard of here in Shetland.

“There was one about five years ago in a similar place, but that was definitely the loudest and clearest I’ve seen in Shetland.”

There were two more earthquakes this month in the UK.

However, both were less than 1.0 degrees.

The largest earthquake recorded in the United Kingdom occurred in the Colchester area in 1884.

About 1,200 buildings were damaged, including collapsed chimneys and cracked walls.
