An international research team placed sensors on six cows, five sheep and two dogs on a farm in Italy in an earthquake-prone area. They studied their movement over several months and found that they were unusually anxious until 20 hours before the earthquakes. Animals closest to the quakes in the center began behaving unusually earlier than those that weren’t, and the team says it’s still unclear how their sixth sense works. They have some ideas. Researchers think that they may be able to sense earthquakes by picking up areas of ionization caused by large rock stresses in earthquake zones with their fur, or it is possible that animals can smell gas from quartz crystals before today’s earthquake and predict when and where earthquakes will occur. The researchers say that studying a large number of animals in different regions around the world remains a challenge that could provide further evidence. The study was published in the journal Mythology International of Behavioral Biology.

According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred just before 3:40 p.m. about two miles south of San Juan Bautista.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 6 km underground and was reported in Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Brunedale.
