Indy has a national health survey.This is what you need to know

Residents of Marion County may have the opportunity to participate in a national survey aimed at taking snapshots of US health and nutrition.

The National Center for Health Statistics, a branch of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, launched a national health and nutrition survey in Marion County over the weekend.

Marion County is just one of the 15 counties nationwide participating in the 5,000 annual survey. An estimated 600 people will be surveyed locally.

“This study will give us access to the first important medical data in the country,” Dr. Virginia Kane, director of the Marion County Public Health Service, said in a press release. “This health information will help drive our public health efforts and play an important role in maintaining the health of the city of Indianapolis.”

The report also collects data on air quality and health food availability in grocery stores. This data may be used by civil servants to design health programs and services aimed at addressing health concerns such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

If you choose to participate in the survey, residents of Marion County will receive a letter by mail. Only invited people can participate to get a random sample.

Participants will fill out a questionnaire, conduct a telephone interview, and undergo a medical examination at a mobile clinic. They receive reports of findings from physical examination. All information collected is confidential.
